Where to buy Gluten-free Food in Munich (Germany)
If you plan to visit Munich or Germany in general, you might not only want to know safe gluten-free places to eat, but also where you can buy gluten-free groceries. The companies can vary whether you are in northern or southern Germany and I am going to focus on Munich and therefore southern Germany. In Germany, you get gluten-free products either in supermarkets, in organic food shops or in drug stores. Some organic food shops do even sell fresh baked and packed gluten-free bread to buy. The following list of common stores in Munich should make it easier for you!
Supermarkets
In many supermarkets you find a shelf with gluten-free products. Most of them have the common products of the brand Schär, while some have even more to choose from. Sometimes, the gluten-free selection is located next to the lactose-free and other dietician products.
Rewe: Has own gluten-free products in addition to Schär, called “Frei von”.
Kaufland and HIT: Both are big stores with normally large gluten-free shelves with various brands.
Edeka: At Edeka, the selection depends on the size of the store. If it is a big one, they should have at least Schär products. But I have also been in very small ones, where there was no dedicated shelf, but I had to search pasta and cookies between all the others.
Aldi, Lidl, Penny and Norma are companies I can not recommend gluten-free-wise! I heard that in some countries the gluten-free offer is good in Aldi and Lidl. However, at least in southern Germany, that is not the case. I sometimes find gluten-free pasta and bread, but the bread is not recommendable from my point of view. In my opinion, it is not worth looking out for gluten-free products in the other two companies either.
Organic Food Shops
Vitalia: Has various stores in Munich and offers different gluten-free brands, that I rarely see in other places. If you are there and see food from the companies Hammermühle or Poensgen, which are German gluten-free bakery businesses, I recommend trying it! Furthermore, they often have gluten-free food in the refrigerated section and sometimes even a fully gluten-free freezer.
Tegut is another shop with a lot of organic food, which normally has also some gluten-free things. Compared to Vitalia though, I personally would say it is less to choose from. The same goes for other individual Organic Food Shops from what I know.
Drug Stores
I love German drug stores as they do not only have cosmetics but also a wide food selection! There are a lot of them in Munich and further, and I would very much recommend visiting one if you pass by it. Usually, you find big gluten-free shelves with bread, muesli, cookies and other snacks.
DM: Has Schär products and usually other brands, too. They even have their own collection, called “DM Bio glutenfrei”.
Rossmann: They sell gluten-free things from their own brand “Ener Bio” as well as from brands like Alnavit. In addition, there are a lot of different snacks and energy/muesli bars, some of which are gluten-free.
Müller: I would say it depends on the size of the shop, as I have seen some with a very big shelf and some with only a hand-full of products. Mostly, they sell Alnavit, and bigger stores can have other brands as well.
Fresh baked gluten-free bread
I have linked the shops where I have discovered freshly baked and packaged gluten-free breads in my free guide on Thatch. As not every shop of the chain sells the fresh bread, but i have only found it in selected shops, I will link you to the guide with the exact addresses here.
Now that you are ready to explore the supermarkets, I wish you a lot of pleasure in trying out some German gluten-free products!
